Deer Jack takes us into the life of an imaginative twelve- year-old orphan boy named David. Longing for adoptive parents who will love and respect him, David endures a succession of foster homes, struggling through several misadventures before he is sent to live in the country with a promising new family. Among their neighbors is an old story teller who befriends the boy, spinning yarns that hold special meaning for David. In the woods between their homes there lives a mysterious, single-horned deer that seems to act as an guardian angel for the children who play there. But David's troubles are far from over; the world of rules and regulations, personified by an authoritarian social worker, threatens to remove him from the idyllic new life he has found. Deer Jack combines adventure, witchcraft, and romance with helpful lessons on how children may grow into strong, principled individuals.
