Pigeon Rooost is an historical novel about my ancestors who came from England and Scotland in the early 1800s to settle in what is now southern Indiana. Family records indicate that my great, great, great grandmother gave birth to a baby minutes after an Indian raid on their colony at Pigeon Roost. I was so captivated by the story of that baby's birth that, having no further information, I was compelled to invent my own ancestral saga.
When I invented Rebecca, I intended her to be entirely fictional and I've been surprised to learn that readers who know me think she is "just like me." I chose which scrapes Rebecca would get into and out of in her adventures from a Scottish croft to a pioneer village with care. My primary goal was to make her experiences typical of the time but just a little special.
